Come January 26, India celebrates its 65th Republic Day. The country that tasted freedom on August 15, 1947 had to wait for more than 2 years to get its permanent Constitution, its foremost article of sovereignty and the longest and the most exhaustive Constitution of any independent nation in the world. That happened on January 26, 1950 and the country proudly became a Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic Republic with the President elected by an electoral college as the head of the state.
On this day- a gazetted holiday all over the country, tens of thousands will converge at Rajpath, the venue of Republic Day parade in the National Capital New Delhi. Millions more will watch the grand event on television.
The President of the country will proudly unfurl the National Flag of the country followed by the National Anthem. The air will echo the sound of 21-gun salute by the Indian soldiers and get filled with patriotic colors as the air force stage stunning maneuvers. An immaculate march past by different regiments of the army, navy and air force, display of advanced technology showcasing India’s military might and tableaus of different states displaying the country’s cultural diversity will be a spectacle to watch.
