Last year, the Earth Day Network celebrated the Earth Day with an inspiring theme “Are you the face of Climate Change.” This year, they have widened the ambit of this theme to go beyond the individual and encompass the city in which we live in. The theme of Earth Day 2014 is thus “Green Cities“.
Are you living in a green city? What exactly is a Green City? Is it a city which boasts of the maximum green cover? That is just one, though very important indicator of ‘greenness’ of a city. Along with it, the continued efforts of a city to use renewable sources of energy like solar and wind energy and lower its dependency on fossil fuels is an important indicator of city’s greenness. Did you know that Reykjavik in Iceland meets only 0.1 percent of its power needs through fossil fuels! No wonder, its popularly considered the greenest city in the world.
Implementing environment-friendly laws, promoting a green lifestyle, lower carbon emissions, recycling of waste, and sustainable living are some other indicators that are fit to make some cities greener than others.
