“Don’t ever let somebody tell you that you can’t do something. Not even me. You got a dream, you gotta protect it. When people can’t do somethin’ themselves, they wanna tell you you can’t do it. If you want somethin’, go get it. Period.”Excerpt from a film based on true story of Chris Gardner who rose up from homelessness and poverty to become a millionaire stockbroker.
Determination and persistence. If you have these, nothing can stop you from turning your dreams into reality. That is what the Hollywood blockbuster The Pursuit of Happiness shows us. It is based on the extraordinary, true story of a man named Chris Gardner who overcomes all challenges to become a millionaire stockbroker.
Chris Gardner is today a successful entrepreneur, a best-selling author, a motivational speaker, and a philanthropist. His childhood however was one full of abuse, poverty and struggle. The movie portrays how one challenge after another comes in his way: his wife leaves him, he loses his house, his bank account and credit cards.
There were days Chris went without food, so his son could eat. There were days when he and his 5-year-old son had no option but to lock themselves and sleep on the bathroom floor of a subway station (This scene makes you cry buckets!)
Yet Chris Gardner doesn’t give up. He works hard to get himself enrolled in a 6-month internship programme with a brokerage firm. It being a non-paying job, he works as a salesman during free time to make both ends meet. His remarkable performance convinces the managers to hire him eventually. A true entrepreneur that he was, Chris later goes on to start his own brokerage firm ‘Gardner Rich’ in Chicago from his home with just $10,000 and become a millionaire stockbroker! Hats off to him, really!
I just spoke about one movie here but there are many movies, 9 in particular as put together by professor and entrepreneur Eric Tachibana, that are must watch for every entrepreneur. Some touching, some funny, while some thought provoking. They show us what entrepreneurs are made of or should be made of. The extraordinary journeys of entrepreneurs shown in these movies will surely give you the extra push to NEVER give up on your dreams.
So, grab your bucket of popcorn and enjoy an inspiring movie fest over this weekend of these 9 movies:
